Questions About Natural Stone

What is granite?

Granite is a solid, durable, and natural stone. Granite is a rock that is formed under the earth’s surface from its magma, which is composed of a variety of minerals such as quartz, feldspar, and mica. Granite got its name from the Latin word “granum,” which means grain; this is because it is a coarse-grained mineral.

Where does granite come from?

Granite comes from all over the world. A majority coming from Italy, Brazil, Norway, Spain, Africa, Egypt…(once you select your choice of granite, we can let you know exactly where it comes from)

What are the benefits of granite?

Granite is the countertop of choice. It contains a mixture of natural beauty and elegance. Granite is heat resistant, resilient against scratches, and completely unique. There are no two pieces alike. It’s a natural stone, and its beauty is never dated. It’s also very easy to maintain.

Who fabricates the slab for your company?

All of our stone/quartz Slab fabrication is done in house right here in Vancouver, WA. The same person who comes out to template your home is the same person who fabricates it, with the help of other employees, of course. Then our crew installs it for you; this ensures the ultimate quality for you as a homeowner.

How involved is the homeowner throughout the process?

As a Vancouver WA homeowner, we encourage you to be involved. You will handpick the slabs yourself. We encourage you to be present when we come out to template your project. We go over seam placement with you, where you’d like to round your corners or any other little changes. We’re happy to do anything that will make your project EXACTLY the way you want it.

After the template process, you are invited to visit our shop once we’ve laid your slabs. This way, you can visually see the slabs laid out on the material you’ve chosen before we cut.

Do you fabricate countertops?

We have done our best to represent most quartz selections in our showroom. You’re welcome to come and look around our showroom.

If it’s a remodel, we will not tear out your existing countertops until your installation day. It only takes us one day to install natural stone slabs. If you’ve chosen a tile backsplash, we typically schedule those for the following day. Backsplashes can take 1-3 days, depending on how much backsplash you have and the material you choose.

A slab backsplash (4″-6″ is standard) will be done the same day we install the kitchen countertops.

Is your showroom open for Do It Yourself clients?

Cleaning Natural Stone Countertops

Cleaning natural stone countertops daily best preserves their beauty and integrity, including granite countertops and quartz countertops.

Only use mild dish soap and a soft cloth. You can also use vinegar, diluted with water, with a soft cloth (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water).

Cleaning Quartz

For daily cleaning of natural countertops made of quartz, we recommend using mild dish soap and a soft cloth.

Please note: sealing quartz products is not recommended.

Sealing Natural Stone

The first question you should ask yourself, does my natural stone countertops need to be resealed?

Here’s a basic test to perform. Sprinkle water on top of your countertops. If the water soaks into the countertops and does not bead on top, we recommend resealing.

We prefer to use a 511 Porous Plus sealer for Natural Stones (granite, marble, travertine, slate, soapstone, and limestones). It’s a penetrating sealer designed for the protection of natural stone.

You can purchase the sealer from us and do it yourself (it’s an easy Sunday DIY project) Or, we offer a deep clean/seal yearly service (please call for pricing).
